Twitter forces new, much worse Tweetdeck on users

  • Twitter has pushed the new version of Tweetdeck to all users days after rate limits were introduced.
  • The new version of Tweetdeck will be cordoned off and become a Twitter Blue feature with the old Tweetdeck seemingly relegated to the history books.
  • With many users bemoaning the change, Meta’s Instagram Threads looks rather attractive.

Let us be clear from the off, when we say “new” in reference to this iteration of Tweetdeck what we actually mean is the new version that was launched roughly two years ago to widespread disdain.

For those who are unaware, Tweetdeck is a version of the website that allows one to see multiple streams of information at once. For example, we use Tweetdeck to monitor both the Hypertext and our personal Twitter accounts. Through this portal we can see and respond to replies, DMs and even populate the page with columns featuring specific accounts.

As mentioned, two years ago Twitter announced and rolled out changes to Tweetdeck and not many users were a fan. Since then, the design hasn’t changed much, if at all but this morning we were met with dark news, the new Tweetdeck is now the only one.

“We have just launched a new, improved version of TweetDeck. All users can continue to access their saved searches & workflows via https://tweetdeck.twitter.com by selecting “Try the new TweetDeck” in the bottom left menu,” the Twitter Support account tweeted out. That tweet has been ratioed, indicative of just how upset the majority of users appear to be.

The support account says that saved searches, columns and workflows will carry over but upon logging in we only had two of our previous eight column activated. Some users also report that the new Tweetdeck is still falling victim to Musk’s rate limit.

The real kicker though is that this once free feature is being rolled into Twitter Blue.

“In 30 days, users must be Verified to access TweetDeck,” reports the support team.

The forced push to the new Tweetdeck comes after the old version stopped working for many after Musk declared that users would only be able to view a limited number of posts per day. This new decree seemingly broke Tweetdeck.

As the creator of BetterTweetdeck commented, “Great move to paywall a new version with less features and that was free for 10+ years.”

This sentiment is shared by many who bemoan the fact that Musk keeps cutting features from the free website and putting them behind his paywall. The billionaire appears to think that folks will stay on the platform, but many have now said that Tweetdeck being cordoned off is the last straw, ourselves included.

And there may be bad news for Twitter on that front.

As reported by The Verge, Meta may be launching its Twitter alternative, Instagram Threads as soon as this week Thursday. How that launch will play out is unclear but Meta’s infrastructure may help it stay up as throngs of users descend on the service in search of that micro-blogging fix.

While the likes of Jack Dorsey and Musk have pointed out how much data the Threads app collects, the rich men failed to share that aside from health and fitness and financial data, Twitter collects the exact same data as Threads will.

We’re curious to see how Twitter continues but we suspect that along with many others, we’ll be watching that journey unfold from afar.
