Threads now lets you choose which content you see

  • Threads has issued an update that lets users choose from a For You and Following timeline.
  • There is now also an easily accessible Translate feature available.
  • Threads has said it will continue to work on updates to its app.

As Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino attempt to turn Twitter into X, an everything app that is powered by AI and a couple of other buzzwords, Meta is making improvements to Threads.

Launched at the beginning of July as a companion app to Instagram, Threads is unabashedly marketing itself as the destination for those who are growing weary with Twitter’s constant changes.

The app also just got a lot better from a usability stand point. Thanks to a new update you can now select two timelines namely For You and Following.

“The For You feed includes a mix of posts from profiles you follow and recommended accounts. Following shows you posts from profiles you’re following, starting with the most recent. To switch from For you to Following, tap on the Threads icon at the top of your feed and swipe,” Threads wrote in a threat.

Yes, we are sticking with Threat (a portmanteau of Thread and Post) for posts on Threads because we’re stubborn.

The app now also features a Translate feature so that if you see a post in a language you can’t read you can tap the bottom right of the post to see a translation.

Notifications can now also be filtered to your liking and there are a few smaller user interface updates.

The platform says that more updates are in the works which is encouraging. We’re hoping that this includes a web interface as having to switch between mobile and desktop for every other social platform, including Instagram, is a bit annoying.

What makes the lack of a web interface all the more annoying is that you can view Threads on a desktop or notebook but you just can’t log in or interact with the website.

Another feature we know is coming soon is the ability to interact with other platforms in the so-called Fediverse. It’s not clear when this is coming but perhaps Meta can bring some level of oversight to the Fediverse and inspire other platform operators to take action against the growing problem of child sexual abuse material on those platforms.

For now though, it’s good to see Meta investing time in making Threads better.
