Brave now serves its own image and video search results

  • Brave Search now allows users to stay in the privacy-preserving Brave ecosystem when searching for images and video.
  • Users won’t have to choose between Google and Bing to find content anymore.
  • This functionality has been two years in the making but there are still some features that aren’t available.

Brave Search, the search engine from the makers of the privacy focused browser has received a bit of an upgrade this week.

Users of the search engine looking for images and video won’t have to choose between Google and Bing anymore and can instead use Brave Search’s native image and video search.

“We realize that the redirect option was not popular with some of our users, and thank them for their patience during this transition. This was a temporary decision to help users find results with minimum hassle, while we worked to offer a sustainable, privacy-preserving, and independent image and video search option,” Brave wrote in a blog post.

The company explains how using the Bing API for image search became untenable two years ago after it was discovered certain searches were censored. As such, Brave decided to build its own platform to find and serve image and video search results. The company says that it will strive to give users the results they are looking for but they will also direct users to other platforms if need be.

The search isn’t perfect yet and will need to be developed. Features such filtering by license type or aspect ratio aren’t available right now but will be soon.

As Brave says, an alternative is more important than feature parity, hence Brave Search’s upgrade now rather than the team waiting to add more features.

“Brave is on a mission to build a user-first Web. That mission starts with the Brave browser and Brave Search. With the release of image and video search, we’re continuing to innovate within the search industry, providing viable and preferable products for users who want choice and transparency in their search for information online,” writes the company.
