Sony increasing price of year-long PlayStation Plus plans

  • Sony has announced that pricing for its 12-month PlayStation Plus plans are set to increase.
  • The increase is said to be global, and will take effect from 6th September.
  • The company detailed the increase at the bottom of a blog post about PS Plus games for September.

As we reach the end of August, as is often the case with a new month on the horizon, Sony details the upcoming PlayStation Plus titles that will be available via its rival GamePass service. This month is different, however, as PlayStation Plus will see a price increase next month.

This increase will not be happening across all plans, but rather the 12-month one that the gaming company currently offers. It is, however, set to increase across all markets that the company operates.

“We also wanted to let you know that starting September 6 we will be increasing the price for PlayStation Plus 12-month subscriptions globally across all benefit plans. This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service,” the company claims in a blog post.

The breakdown of the new pricing after 6th September is as follows:

  • PlayStation Plus Essential 12-Month Subscription
    79.99 USD | 71,99 Euro | 59.99 GBP | 6,800 Yen
  • PlayStation Plus Extra 12-Month Subscription
    134.99 USD | 125,99 Euro | 99.99 GBP | 11,700 Yen
  • PlayStation Plus Premium 12-Month Subscription
    159.99 USD | 151,99 Euro | 119.99 GBP | 13,900 Yen”

For reference, the 12-Month Essential, Extra, and Premium (Deluxe) plans cost R749, R1 239, and R1 249 respectively in SA before the announcement of the impending increase.

Unfortunately the ZAR pricing for the increases is absent, but we have reached out to official local distributor for PlayStation in South Africa, Gamefinity, on the matter. The distributor does not have pricing at the time of writing, but says it will share with Hypertext when it does. Once that happens, we will do the same for our readers.

The last element worth noting is for current 12-Month PlayStation Plus subscribers. Here Sony explains that, “This price increase will not take effect until your next renewal date that occurs on or after November 6. However, any membership changes you make on or after September 6, such as upgrades, downgrades or buying additional time, will update your plan reflecting the new prices.”

With this PlayStation offering still being heavily outgunned by GamePass and the sheer volume of titiles it makes available to subscribers, it will be interesting to see how this
