The 10 best new trailers from Gamescom 2023

  • The opening night of Gamescom 2023 was held yesterday, and we have a host of new trailers to comb through.
  • We saw cinematic offerings and some gameplay from the likes of Starfield, Black Myth Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty and much more.
  • Additionally, we got the take a look at Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi film, Rebel Moon.

Tuesday saw the first night of festivities from Gamescom 2023 as the videogame world converges in Germany for the weeklong event held from 23rd to 27th August. The first night, hosted by the spectre of gaming Geoff Keighley saw new gameplay trailers and announcements from some of the most anticipated upcoming titles.

We decided to round up the biggest and best trailers shown off at the opening day event, starting with a new live-action trailer for Starfield.

This is Bethesda’s fourth live-action trailer since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim saw its own after the game’s release. Clearly, it was successful because every mainline Bethesda game has received one since then, including Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and now Starfield.

The trailer places an emphasis on the fantasy of the sci-fi RPG, exploring space, discovering alien species, blowing up space pirates and stumbling upon inexplainable supernatural phenomena. I can’t believe No Man’s Sky has been out for seven years.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the latest thing from Ubisoft and it’s definitely a game that is to be played if you want. The trailer shows off the city of Baghdad, a major location in the upcoming title and the 13th game in the series.

The atmosphere, the markets, the flamingoes and the nights. Here is where it turns bloody, and unlike Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Mirage seemingly returns to the grounded, historical roots of the series.

We got gameplay from an original title in Nightingale – a Minecraft-like survival game that looks like the cross between Valheim and Arcanum (if anyone remembers ever playing that). Mine, and craft and build your way to success, and fight mythical-looking monsters along the way.

Nightingale hits early access in February 2024.

What is being billed as the first AAA game out of China, Black Myth: Wukong has a new trailer for us. The game is set to come out in the winter of 2024 and we can see some of the latest work that Game Science has done on the world of Wukong.

The trailer is basically an atmospheric overview of the game, some of the zones you will get to explore and some of the bosses you will get to pummel with your extending staff. Some crazy, beautiful visuals are on offer here as Wukong continues to serve a banquet of violence and excellent art direction. Also, this trailer may indicate that the game has a gear or item system as the fabled Monkey King is wearing different equipment throughout.

The latest Call of Duty has received a story trailer at Gamescom 2023. Modern Warfare 3 will see the player infiltrate what looks like a castle in the middle of the ocean via a submarine.

You and your team of ultimate cool dudes will make quick work of the nameless lackeys guarding the structure and you will watch as the rest of your team suddenly appears from paragliders. In the middle of a storm. And they land perfectly on a tiny target. At night. The trailer needs to be seen to be believed.

We finally get a look at all the new features and updates heading to Cyberpunk 2077 in the Phantom Liberty expansion. CD Projekt Red told the media in June that the DLC wasn’t just new content, but a top-down revamp of most of the major features of the game. It seems that after three years, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally finished.

The expansion, featuring Idris Elba, launches worldwide in September.

Mortal Kombat 1 has a new trailer, showing off two new characters in General Shao, the non-Khan version of Shao Khan sans warhammer and sporting a new battleaxe, and his old battleaxe Sindel, once tyrant queen of Outworld. We also get new cameo fighters, including Motaro the centaur who is giving us major The Rock in The Mummy 2 vibes

We just wish Raiden would like a bit more like Raiden and not just Shaolin Monk #127.

Next in the trailers is the third instalment in the side-scrolling horror series Little Nightmares was revealed on the opening night of Gamescom 2023, and it looks like fans of the series can expect even more disturbing, yet somehow delightful jaunting through abandoned locations filled with creepy goings-on.

It seems Little Nightmares 3 will be a co-op experience, as much of the trailer is devoted to two new characters.

We are treated to an incredibly gory trailer for the infamously gory game Killing Floor, this time a new sequel to the horde shooter. A lab-grown mutant undergoes a needlessly painful surgery to create some form of pain monster. It seems that the game will feature improved graphical fidelity, but this is just the cinematic trailer so we will have to wait for actual gameplay.

A bunch of other games were shown off during night one, including new gameplay from The First Descendant, Tekken 8, Sonic Superstars, Granblue Fantasy, Crimson Desert, Age of Empires IV, and more.

Finally, a Netflix movie was shown off as part of the trailers at Gamescom 2023, only earning its spot because of how incredibly nerdy an original Zack Snyder sci-fi could possibly be. From the trailer the film, Rebel Moon, seems like a fever dream of a 14 year old after staying up all night and watching all of the Star Wars films, Dune from Denis Villeneuve, The Chronicles of Riddick, Guardians of the Galaxy, and basically every movie or media in the genre ever.

Behold, Sci-Fi the Movie.

Rebel Moon is expected to be a two-parter, which is either two parts for one film, or two films. From all the different images, locations, characters and just stuff in this trailer, we think maybe two films is a good idea.
