Intel puts hopes on new generative AI notebooks

  • At an event held in Silicon Valley, manufacturer Intel revealed its first “AI PC.”
  • This new notebook uses the latest and greatest Intel processor to run generative AI software without internet access.
  • The new chips are also expected to be Intel’s finest in terms of energy efficiency.

When the only thing seemingly working in the world of tech is artificial intelligence (AI), it’s no wonder why the largest corporations are rushing to make sure they can get a piece of the trillion-dollar pie. The latest sees PC parts manufacturer Intel announce a brand new notebook that focuses on generative AI capabilities similar to ChatGPT.

The innovation is being called the “AI PC.” Intel showed off the new notebook at a software developer conference held in Silicon Valley, reports Reuters.

The machine’s biggest difference maker is that it can use generative AI technology while not being connected to the internet. So far software like ChatGPT requires the user to be online so that it can access a huge amount of data hosted on the cloud in order to function properly.

The notebook is able to do this, parse massive amounts of data, thanks to a new processor designed for future notebooks from Intel called “Meteor Lake.”

Meteor Lake notebooks do not require the cloud to use generative AI software. At the event, Intel demonstrated how the notebook sans internet could generate a Taylor Swift-like song and answer questions in a conversational style.

According to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, other AI-based software like Microsoft Copilot will work on the AI PC and others that Intel is working on.

“We see the AI PC as a sea change moment in tech innovation,” Gelsinger enthused.

Windows Central writes that the new Meteor Lake chips also bring a new standard of energy efficiency, which means more power and longer battery life for your machine, and will ship worldwide in late 2023 or early 2024.

While clearly an innovative bit of engineering, the shift to AI and the coinage of the so-called AI PC represents a bandwagon leap for Intel. One that makes sense given the current environment. While Intel has floundered in 2023 so far with its parts business and chips, NVIDIA’s nearly wholehearted shift into making AI processors saw it eclipse its contemporary in sheer profits, now making it one of the world’s most valuable companies.

So why not join the likes of everyone else and get in on the generative AI craze while there is still money to be made? The latest from analysts like McKinsey have revealed that the technology could make the global economy $7.3 trillion every year.

Perhaps it is too little too late from Intel. Investors didn’t seem so dazzled by the Meteor Lake chip and the AI-made pop song. Intel traded down 1.5 percent after the event.
