Destiny 2’s best glitch will probably be fixed by Thursday

  • Destiny 2 players discovered a glitch at the weekend that allowed them to create weapons they shouldn’t have been able to.
  • Aware of the glitch and seemingly the work required to fix it, Bungie gave players permission to make use of the glitch without threat of a ban.
  • The developer has been working behind the scenes to fix the glitch.

At the weekend a glitch was discovered in Destiny 2. Yes we know, a new glitch in a game brimming with them isn’t exactly special but this one was.

The glitch appeared in Destiny’s weapon crafting system. Some clever folks discovered that if you were to drop the game’s refresh rate to 30FPS you could exploit a bug that allowed you to craft a weapon with perks it shouldn’t have.

While we don’t know the technicalities of what happened just yet, it appears as if the lower frame rate allowed a player to select a craftable Exotic weapon and in the few frames where the screen to craft that weapon loaded, you could select a different weapon. The result was that you could craft a Legendary weapon with an Exotic weapon’s traits.

As an example, we crafted an IKELOS_SMG_V1.0.3 with the Screaming Swarm Exotic perk from Osteo Striga.

Don’t judge our stats, we were working on a build okay?

The example above is among the tamest of the weapons the community created. There were Linear Fusion rifles firing off multiple rounds at once, auto rifles firing grenade launcher rounds and swords with double Eager Edge among many others.

What made this glitch all the more fun is that Bungie effectively told players to enjoy it while they could. The developer highlighted the offenses in the game that would get a player banned but exploiting this glitch is not one of those offenses.

This is a product of Bungie’s very lenient ban policy which allows players to use known glitches that exist within the game. Using third-party cheats and exploits would still get one banned though.

Unfortunately, this glitch arrived during the first round of Trials of Osiris for Season of the Witch. This made going Flawless in the mode nigh on impossible. On the other side of the coin however, the glitch was used to complete solo Dungeons, melt Raid bosses, and more.

Since the glitch was discovered, Bungie has been working to fix it. In a testament to the work being done on the backend of the game, Bungie was able to deploy server-side fixes which prevented the glitch from happening. However, there still appear to be remnants of the glitch as some have reported being able to craft Legendary weapons in archetypes that shouldn’t exist. For example, a bow with Reservoir Burst, a perk reserved for Fusion Rifles.

Over the last four days, Bungie has been slowly implementing a fix and that fix will still take a while yet. There is maintenance scheduled for Tuesday evening but a full fix is likely to only come later in the week.

“Due to ongoing work to fix remaining weapon crafting issues, the Master Crota’s End Raid mode and Checkmate Control modifier in Crucible Labs have been delayed. Update 7.2.0.4, which includes a change to drop rates for the Essences of the Oversoul, has also been delayed as a result,” Bungie Help said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

With that having been said, Exotic perks for craftable weapons have been disabled which is a bit of a letdown even if it is understandable.

This was a once in a lifetime glitch and it was great to see the community get creative with the weapons they crafted. We highly recommend watch the video below to see just how crazy the game got this weekend.
