Disney+ begins crackdown on password sharing

  • Disney+ has announced that it will restrict password sharing in Canada from 1st November.
  • The restriction will not allow Disney+ account holders to share login details with anyone physically outside their household.
  • The platform is hoping to shift would-be password sharers to the lower-cost ad-supported tier of Disney+.

The restrictions on password sharing that Netflix began in selected regions last year are starting to spread to other platforms. This as Disney+ has announced restrictions on password sharing that are set to take effect from 1st November this year in Canada.

The Great White North is the only country to receive said restrictions at the time of writing, but as Disney CEO Bob Iger intimated earlier this year, this is a plan that Disney+ will look to implement in many of the regions where its streaming platform is currently made available.

Much like Netflix, Disney+ appears to be using a restriction on password sharing to get more people signed up to the service, or get current account holders to pay more in order to have sharing enabled.

To that end, the platform has been sending out emails to subscribers notifying them of the impending change, according to Engadget. Here sharing will be limited to, “the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence.”

For those willing to pay more to open up access to their account, no specific amount has been detailed at the time of writing, but the similar Netflix option charges a premium of $8 (~R153) per extra person, per month. If that is the cost that Disney+ is pondering, large families or groups could be rack up quite the monthly bill.

The other method that Disney+ will be implementing in order to generate more revenue is a new ad-supported tier, which too will launch in Canada and parts of Europe come 1st November. As such, the playbook looks to be ripped straight from Netflix.

What this will mean for South African subscribers, remains to be seen, but we have reached out to Disney+’s local representatives for comment on the matter.
