Showmax Pro is cutting sport from its offer as it readies new product

  • Showmax Pro in its current form will be phased out from 30th November.
  • Part of this means retiring sports streaming from the premium Showmax subscription package.
  • Showmax says that existing customers will be offered discounted DStv streaming packages through which they can watch a variety of sports.

Earlier this year MultiChoice announced a Showmax shake-up. Partnering with NBCUniversal, the streaming platform will be getting an upgrade although for many, it may offer less.

This is because from 30th November, Showmax Pro as we know it will be phased out. The translation here is that sport will no longer feature on the platform. Instead, Showmax will direct Pro customers to take up a DStv Compact Plus Stream package for the same price as Showmax Pro. Usually this package costs R549 per month so Showmax is giving Pro subscribers a decent discount here.

The platform says that this package will give customers live sport from SuperSport including the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, and additional sport like the NBA, NFL and UFC, as well as selected Rugby World Cup 2023 games. Sadly, DStv Stream only allows one concurrent viewer at a time.

Showmax also says that Pro subscribers in other African markets will be offered a DStv Stream package for the same price as Showmax Pro which includes live sport from SuperSport including the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A and additional sports like the NBA, NFL and UFC. Of course, these customers can also access other content broadcast on DStv.

The platform stopped offering Showmax Pro subscriptions on 1st October and existing subscribers won’t be charged after 30th October but will still be able to continue streaming content until the last day of their subscription.

You can still take up a Showmax Pro Mobile subscription as of time of writing but, Showmax states that the DStv offers outlined above won’t be made to those subscribers.

“This deal is exclusively available to existing Showmax Pro customers, who will receive emails from Showmax and DStv with more information about the deal. This offer isn’t available to Showmax Pro Mobile customers, but other mobile offers will become available in future,” the platform wrote.

It isn’t clear whether the new Showmax will feature sports streaming or indeed what sort of content mix we can expect. This update has been in the works for a while though so we’re hoping to see

As to when that will be, we simply don’t know at this stage, and Showmax isn’t saying anything.

For now, then it may be best for existing Showmax Pro customers to wait until they’re offered the discounted DStv Stream packages if they want to continue streaming sports before searching elsewhere.
