We finally know when “The Witcher 4” will start production

  • CD Projekt will begin development on the first title in a new Witcher trilogy this year, with production expected to be in full swing by mid-year.
  • The new series of Witcher games will expand upon the existing universe and will run on Unreal Engine.
  • A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is also in production, but in the early concept phase.

Now that the story of Cyberpunk 2077 is finally wrapped up as of the Phantom Liberty expansion, Poland’s CD Projekt is finally ready to begin production on its next game – “Witcher 4” known officially as project Polaris, a brand new adventure in the Witcher series.

According to a report from Reuters, CD Projekt CEO Adam Badowksi said he’d like the game to be in full swing by the middle of 2024.

“We’d like to have around 400 people working on the project by the middle of the year,” he said, assuming the position of joint CEO along with Michal Nowakowski in January. The new Witcher trilogy will be separate from its initial three games, which began with The Witcher in 2007 and culminated in The Witcher III: Wild Hunt in 2015 – considered by many as one of the best games ever made.

In total the Witcher series sold over 75 million copies for the studio, transforming it from a “slav jank Eastern European” developer to a global AAA videogame corporation, and in the meantime made Andrzej Sapkowski’s characters like Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer household names.

Currently under the project name “Polaris”, the upcoming Witcher series will expand the medieval fantasy universe of the books, and follow a new storyline outside of the trials and tribulations of Geralt of Rivia. The first game in the trilogy is expected sometime in 2026 or 2027.

“Witcher 4” will be CD Projekt’s first game to use an engine outside of its in-house REDengine, and will reportedly make use of the latest and greatest Unreal Engine 5.

The studio’s next major project was Cyberpunk 2077 which launched in 2020 unfinished (and unplayable on the PlayStation 4 in particular). After three years worth of work from the studio, the game was finally proclaimed complete in 2023 following the launch of the Phantom Liberty expansion pack – an excellent send-off to a troubled, but wonderful role-playing game.

According to Badowski, a sequel to Cyberpunk is in the works and is now in the conceptual phase. This project has the name of “Orion.” It is expected to have around 80 developers working on it by the end of the year.

“Orion” may include a multiplayer element, said Nowakoski, but did not disclose any more information to Reuters.

The Polish studio has also inked a deal with production company Anonymous Content last year to produce a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 “work” – either a series or film.
