SPEEDRUN – SA can expect the internet to be fixed, just not soon

Monday ushers in a new week in tech, but many South Africans are still left buffering as seismic activity in the ocean takes down a vital undersea internet cable system in West Africa. While some services like Microsoft Azure have been restored, DownDetector still shows that locals are struggling with a spotty connection.

According to the people who are set to fix the cables, repairs will take at least five weeks. In the meantime, we have a water crisis on our hands in Africa’s wealthiest city and an administration that couldn’t seem to care less. Elon Musk’s generative AI goes open source and writes up a pretty good press release, Apple heads to the courts once more, Standard Bank makes a baffling decision and we have some choice consumer tech pieces rounding out this edition of SPEEDRUN.
