Against all better judgement they’re trying to make a fifth Matrix film

  • Warner Bros. has reportedly greenlit the development of a fifth Matrix film.
  • The screenwriter of The Martian, Drew Goddard, has been tapped to both write and direct the new project.
  • The fourth Matrix film, Resurrections, has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 63 percent.

The Matrix, which released in 1999, could be argued as being one of the best sci-fi action films of all time. Instead of keeping its legacy intact, two middling sequels were made and then a fourth film hit cinemas in 2021 with half of its original director duo and some key cast members choosing not to pursue the project.

Matrix Resurrections was arguably the worst of the films in the franchise, and did not garner much revenue at the box office either, but this reportedly has not stopped the higher ups at Warner Bros. from green lighting a fifth Matrix movie.

At the time of writing, it remains to be seen if original talent like Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss would return for the fifth outing, but Deadline reports that Drew Goddard is in talks to both write and direct the project.

Goddard received an Oscar nomination for his work as a screenwriter for The Martian, and has some directing experience under his belt as his most notable feature is The Cabin in the Woods. Lana Wachowski, who directed Resurrections, is set to be a producer on the project.

Precisely what direction the fifth film would go, especially given how Resurrections ended, remains unclear for now, but executives at Warner Bros. confirmed that Goddard pitched an interesting idea to them for the movie.

He is also clearly a very big fan of the original, as most moviegoers are, noting that, ““It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life.”

“Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world,” he added.

While we’re not sure whether a fifth Matrix movie is what the world needs right now, our only hope is that Goddard’s love of that specific universe, as well as his most recent film exploits, could result in something worthwhile.
