SPEEDRUN – NSFAS keeps dropping the ball

South African students at local tertiary institutions are seemingly being left in the lurch as the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) continues to struggling in managing the payments of learners in dire need of funding to not only continue studying, but simply eat too.

This as the chaos of last year in which four fintech companies struggled to effectively implement a new payment system, along with allegations of corruption being bandied about and a chairperson stepping down from their role.

The latest aspect in this saga is a vote of no confidence from the ANC-affiliated South African Student Congress (SASCO), which one of the oldest students’ rights groups in the country. It is now calling on students to protest the payment system currently in place, as tensions between NSFAS and the learners they are meant to be aiding are only set to intensify.
