Unboxing the Huawei nova 12i

Earlier today Huawei Mobile South Africa launched a pair of new mid-range smartphones under its nova series moniker – the nova 12i and nova 12 SE.

We have the former in for review, which is set to publish later this week so keep an eye out for it, but before we detail our experience with the nova 12i, we thought we’d unbox this freshly minted device that recently landed on our review desk.

What follows are bunch of pictures noting that you get in the box when you purchase a nova 12i.

In terms of the actual packaging, Huawei does not cut corners depending on what series of smartphone you’ve bought. As such, the quality you get with a nova series phone is the same as that for a more expensive P series or Mate series device.

The same crucially applies when it comes to the other elements, outside of the phone itself, that feature in the box. We’ll get to that shortly, but the nova 12i itself is wrapped in the usual paper cover to protect the device from any surface scratches or fingerprints before powering it up. Huawei also cover the display with a sticker detailing some of the specifications of the device.

Speaking of which, the full set of specifications for the nova 12i are as follows:

nova 12i
Display6.7″ LCD FullHD+ (2388×1080)
ProcessorQualcomm Snapdragon 680
RAM8GB
Storage256GB
Rear Camera108MP primary, 2MP depth sensing
Front Camera8MP selfie
Battery5 000mAh
Connectivity4G
RRPR6 999

There are two things that immediately strike you when looking at this device – its colour and the massive camera array on the rear.

Regarding the former Huawei calls this colour option Green, although we’d describe it has having a deeper jewel-like tone to it.

Unfortunately it has a plastic-y feel to it because it’s made of… plastic. It is not removable, however, and there is a generic plastic cover included in the box should you be concerned with protecting your new purchase. It is clear too, so you can still enjoy the colour, and in our experience, Huawei’s plastic covers do not yellow as quickly as ones from other companies.

The camera array is circled by a gold/brushed nickel looking housing, which Huawei has named the Star Orbit Ring. Within the Ring sits an equally large 108MP camera that is used for moist of the photography/videography on the device.

The usual literature on the device itself is present in the box too, along with a long USB Type-C charging cable, a SIM tray tool, protective film that’s already attached to the display, and the warranty card.

The other crucial element included in the box is a 40W two-prong wall charger that supports Huawei SuperCharge functionality. These are becoming increasingly rare among other manufacturers, even in the mid-range space, but it is good to see the likes of Huawei still ensuring that one is present in the box, which means you don’t have to pay extra for what is an essential accessory for the phone.

Outside of the slightly plastic-feeling rear cover, the nova 12i has a lot going for it, and we’ll share all our thoughts on this latest offering from Huawei soon. While our review score is still pending, in terms of what you get the box, Huawei definitely does not leave you wanting.
