SPEEDRUN – Petrol increase no April Fool’s

Many South Africans woke up on Tuesday morning hoping that the worse of April Fool’s Day was behind them, but as it turns out, there was one last prank to be pulled by government as the price of petrol is set to increase.

More specifically the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) confirmed that petrol would cost 65 cents and 67 cents more per litre for 93 LRP and 95 LRP respectively from 3rd April.

Other noteworthy events in this morning’s SPEEDRUN roundup include an ever worsening situation at one of the fintechs charged with distributing NSFAS funds to students, an elaborate phishing scam on Facebook that nearly got us, and a review of Honor’s first foldable launched in SA – the Magic V2.

We also spoke with executives from four local SMEs as it has been four years since lockdown was first imposed in South Africa as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We asked them how business has changed in recent years, and what they learned from the experience.
