Ubisoft planning remakes of older Assassin’s Creed titles

  • CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, this week shared his insights on the future of Assassin’s Creed.
  • In an interview conducted and published by Ubisoft itself, he noted that the company is looking to modernise some older titles.
  • The remake strategy is part of a larger goal to have Assassin’s Creed games release with increased regularity.

The latest offering in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Shadows, will be landing on 15th November this year and as fans of the gaming series eagerly await its release or save up money to actually purchase the expensively priced title, developer/publisher Ubisoft has offered an update on Assassin’s Creed as a whole.

More specifically Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, shared his insights into the business, as well as what the coming years hold in an interview conducted by Ubisoft itself and published on its own site.

As such, some of the answers should be taken with a grain of salt, but one element that did stand out is the fact that remakes of older Assassin’s Creed titles are in the works.

Here Guillemot was explaining the company’s strategy as it pertained to the mix of titles under the Assassin’s Creed banner that it planned to release. To that end, serving up modernised remakes of fan favourite titles would help Ubisoft release titles with increasing regularity.

“Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we’ve created in the past and modernize them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin’s Creed games that are still extremely rich,” he noted.

He also pointed to a game beyond the upcoming Shadows, with Hexe being a title he is particularly excited about, although no concrete information is known about it at this stage.

“To answer your question, there will be plenty of experience variety. The goal is to have Assassin’s Creed games come out more regularly, but not for it to be the same experience every year. There are a lot of good things to come, including Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which we’ve announced, which is going to be a very different game from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. We’re going to surprise people, I think,” shared Guillemot.

Sadly the CEO did not hint at which older titles would be getting remakes, nor when players can expect such titles to make their way to official release. That said, reports from the likes of Kotaku suggest that a Black Flag remake is in the works, with it being one of the most popular titles in the franchise when it was released in 2013.

That specific remake would also help cleanse the palette following the lacklustre release of Skull and Bones earlier this year.

Regardless of when the remakes arrive, it is clear that Ubisoft is taken a page out of Capcom and Square Enix’s playbooks, with both Japanese companies having found success with respective Resident Evil and Final Fantasy remakes.
