80s icons (and Iron Man) arrive at South African LEGO stores

  • A Lamborghini Countach and Bumblebee, both 80s staples, are now new LEGO sets.
  • An Iron Man set based on Iron Man 2 joins the pair.
  • Many free sets are available for those spending big.

Like most months LEGO is out for your money with a new wave of sets but, for July 2024, the wave is on the small side with a bend towards the 80s with two sets being from that era and, to round it off, there’s a random Iron Man 2 set in there as well.

Click on the names of the sets, or the images, to be taken to the store pages for these new sets.

Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole

  • Set number: 10337
  • Price: R 3 399
  • Piece count: 1 506

While the original Countach is a product of the 70s, the 5000 Quattrovalvole is firmly a staple of the 80s and it is this version which has now been turned into a set.

As the most expensive of the three new sets it will take some convincing to pick it up, but it looks damn good and we’re very tempted.

That being said we have already covered two other ways to get a LEGO Lamborghini Countach. There’s a smaller – and much cheaper – version available right now, as well as a unique alt build alternative from the community.

Transformers Bumblebee

  • Set number: 10338
  • Price: R1 699
  • Piece count: 950

The LEGO Optimus Prime from 2022 is still one of our favourite ever sets, so we’re glad to see that the LEGO X Hasbro partnership has continued in the form of this new Transformer.

Like Optimus Prime, Bumblebee can go between robot and alt mode (a facsimile of a VW Beetle) without any disassembly, you just twist and turn the set until you win up back in either mode.

Well that’s not entirely true. There is one section of the set that requires some partsforming, but see our separate story for more on that.

BrickHeadz Iron Man Mk5 Figure

  • Set number: 40669
  • Price: R219
  • Piece count: 101

For some strange reason LEGO has returned to 2010 to bring us a set based on Iron Man 2. This is the Mark V armour which some may know as the “Suitcase Suit” due to the fact that could it be folded up into a briefcase, back before Iron Man was all nanotech.

BrickHeadz are LEGO’s Funko Pop, deformed statuettes that they have been doing for many years now. So many years that this is the third time that Iron Man has been done as a BrickHeadz set. Sets 41590 (from 2017) and 41604 (from 2018) have both been retired for quite some time, so it is nice to have Iron Man available in this theme again for those who want it.

Your choice of free set(s)

All three of the July sets are exclusive to the physical LEGO Certified Stores in South Africa and its online platform Great Yellow Brick. While that does cut down your options on where to shop, it does give you access to Gift With Purchase (GWP) sets.

GWP are free sets that are included with orders which meet certain thresholds. Right now, for example, there are GWP sets for spending R1 500, R2 000, R3 000, or R4 000.

The available GWPs can be found here but keep in mind, for them to appear in your cart, you need to make an account on Great Yellow Brick and choose your GWP before checking out. You also need to stick to the GWP rules, such as the fact that only one GWP set is included in each order and discounted sets do not count towards the aforementioned thresholds.

If you are shopping in store the staff (which are all lovely, at every location from our personal experience) will help you out.

Save money for the August deluge

We’d be remiss not to mention that, while the July sets are great, LEGO fans should be saving up a lot of money for August.

August 2024 is planning to be one of the biggest release windows of the year, especially for Star Wars which is celebrating a few milestones this year.

Just today new sets for Ahsoka, Avengers, the original trilogy and more were revealed for August. This joins other sets like the X-Wing / TIE Fighter combo pack and The Dark Falcon, which you can see above.

That’s just a few new sets that will arrive in August, so plan accordingly.
