Netflix’s Horizon Zero Dawn series reportedly getting axed

  • Netflix is reportedly cancelling the Horizon Zero Dawn series it planned to develop.
  • The series is getting axed because of allegations surrounding one of its key producers.
  • The same producer is accused of creating a toxic work environment on The Umbrella Academy, which enters its final season next month.

Those with hopes of seeing a live-action Horizon Zero Dawn series may want to turn away now as Netflix has reportedly cancelled the development of the project.

This according to a report from Rolling Stone, which cites allegations that have come out regarding one of the producers of the in-development series – Steve Blackman.

The publication filed a report at the end of June (paywall)citing several allegations of misconduct against Blackman for creating a toxic work environment on the set of The Umbrella Academy, which enters its final season on Netflix next month.

As many as 12 staff working on production of The Umbrella Academy came forward to highlight his behaviour, with an official HR complaint also being issued. Investigative reporter at the publication, Cheyenne Roundtree, wrote that Blackman had a, “long history of toxic, bullying, manipulative, and retaliatory behavior.”

Following the damning story, it looks like two projects that Blackman was set to develop, one of which was the Horizon Zero Dawn series, have now been cancelled.

That said, Roundtree has yet to write a full report on the latest development, and at the time of writing, does not confirm whether the series is simply being put on hold until a new producer can be brought onboard, or whether Netflix is stepping away entirely.

Netflix has yet to comment on the reports either, and while the original series that was also under development, Orbital, may be dead in the water owing to allegations against Blackman, it is unclear whether Guerrilla Games would allow a potentially lucrative IP like Horizon Zero Dawn from being shelved altogether.

As such, if Netflix no longer wants to make the series, we’re sure another streaming platform will snap it up, especially given the recent success of Fallout on Amazon Prime Video.
