You may be good with a soldering iron and a few SMD components, but real makers work with iron and steel – or something like that.

Flippancy aside, if you’re interested in picking up the basics of working with hot metal and an anvil to enhance your makers skills Dennis Kriel is hosting a day long introductory session at a forge in Pretoria on 30th May. The plan is to teach people how to make a fire poker, so you can brag about it over a braai, but the important bit will be learning how to handle your tongs.

It costs R1 250 for the day’s course, and includes lunch and refreshments. Find out more here. Today a poker, tomorrow a giant robot warrior of your own devising and all that.
