realme to bring its 12 Series to South Africa “soon”

  • realme South Africa says that two 12 Series smartphones will launch locally soon.
  • This includes the realme 12 5G and the realme 12+ 5G.
  • While the 12 5G has impressive camera technology, the 12+ 5G has better performance hardware but a lesser camera setup.

Shenzhen, China’s realme smartphone brand says that it will “soon” launch its 12 Series in South Africa, with the realme 12+ 5G and the realme 12 5G smartphones headlining the series. The company highlights the series’ photography capabilities and hardware geared for high performance.

The news follows the local launch of the realm C67 in South Africa, a midrange device for just under R8 000, with 8GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon 685 chip on board. But unlike the C67 which only has 4G connectivity, the 12 Series is capable of going 5G.

realme 12+ 5G specifications

Starting with the realm 12+ 5G, this particular device is all about its impressive performance hardware, but it also comes with tech for burgeoning photographers.

Onboard we get 12GB of RAM, which can be expanded by another 12GB thanks to Dynamic RAM capabilities. Running things in the background is a Mediatek Dimensity 7050 5G processor, which realme says runs 8 cores and is a 64 bit CPU.

In terms of camera, we have a 50MP main snapper, with 112-degree ultrawide lense, a micro camera and a 12MP selfie cam.

The 12+ comes with an AMOLED display, and a 5 000mAh battery, which is par for the course, but also 67W SUPERVOOC charging, which realme claims can top up the battery in just 45 minutes.

While the 12+ is geared for super performance capabilities, the realme 12 5G comes with a 108MP main camera, and 3X zoom. realme says this snapper has a 2 400 x 1 080 resolution, and FHD+ Sunlight Display with 16.7 million colour spectrum.

There is also the 8MP selfie camera, same as the 12+, and under the hood it features the MediaTek Dimensity 6 100+ 5G chipset. Unlike the 12+, the 12 has lesser performance hardware but a better main camera.

We also see the same size battery, but slower fast charging at just 45W.

“realme is committed to empowering South African youth to be more daring through leap-forward technology and design,” says Gareth Clarke, realme Account Lead for SA.

“The combination of high-end features and accessible pricing in the new realme 12 Series embodies our goal of delivering compelling value propositions for the midrange smartphone market.”

We have reached out to realme South Africa for the pricing and the exact release dates of the 12 Series smartphones locally and will update readers as soon as we have the information.
