WATCH THIS: 360-degree video of a Mercedes F1 car on a racetrack

Keen to impress those who might find F1 tedious and boring, the Mercedes AMG F1 team has used a trick bit of technology to make us all go “oooeer!” for at least a few minutes.

To achieve this the team strapped a high-tech camera rig to its 2014 F1 racer, codenamed F1 W05, to create a new kind of video. Rather than having some regular ol’ GoPro footage of the car going around the racetrack, the video is interactive – it lets people pan around 360 degrees in all directions.

Fans can now enjoy the all the whooshing and whistling of this year’s new V6 turbocharged hybrid engines, while simultaneously looking at the driver’s hands on the wheel, then the rear wheels, then the sky, and even at scenery on the track. The one-lap clip shows the car going around Britain’s Silverstone circuit, but we have it on good authority that Mercedes strapped the rig to its car at the Sakhir Circuit in Bahrain, where season testing is currently taking place. Hopefully it does this for each of the venues and ends up with a fantastic library of 360-degree videos for each of the circuits the series visits.
