Galaxy Z Flip3 skips a number but improves on the original

Today at its second Unpacked event for the year, Samsung showed off a brand new Galaxy Z Flip handset, but it’s not called the Galaxy Z Flip2.

Instead, Samsung has opted to bring its Z range under one number scheme and as such the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is born.

Samsung has opted to stick with the clam-shell design here which reveals a 6.7inch Full HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

The cover display has grown from 1.1inches to 1.9inches and it has a slightly higher resolution at 260x512p.

In terms of dimensions Samsung has managed to cut a few millimetres off of the Z Flip3 and it should be a bit easier to handle.

The main rear snapper is comprised of two camera namely:

  • 12MP, F2.2, 123 degree field of view Ultra Wide
  • 12MP Dual Pixel AF, OIS, F1.8, 78 degree field of view Wide Angle

The front camera isn’t under the display like the Galaxy Z Fold3, but given that this camera is likely to be used more often due to the Flip3’s design it’s understandable. With that in mind you will find a 10MP camera with a F2.4 aperture and an 80 degree field of view.

Under the hood you will find a 5nm 64-bit octa-core processor paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage.

The battery is smaller than in the Fold3 at 3 300mAh but given the Flip3’s smaller form factor this is understandable. Importantly, this is a dual battery.

Like it’s bigger sibling, the Flip3 is IPX8 water resistant and features the same Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and Armor Aluminum frame.

Also like the Fold3, Samsung hasn’t announced an availability date yet. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 starts at $999.99 in the US, but when we have local pricing and availability we’ll be sure to update you.
