Our favourite trailers from The Game Awards 2021

In the wee hours of Friday morning The Game Awards took place as they do at this time of the year.

The awards seek to recognise the best of the best in gaming and if you missed the winners you can read our round-up here.

While it’s wonderful to see those working on the entertainment medium we enjoy so much being recognised for their efforts, The Game Awards also give us a taste of what’s to come.

The pandemic has up-ended many development cycles but in 2022 we are going to be spoiled for choice when it comes to new games. We have compiled 33 trailers from the award show in this YouTube Playlist here if you want the full scoop but we’ll touch on a few of our favourites below. Note that the videos below have been pulled from the playlist mentioned above so other trailers may automatically play upon completion.

Let’s start off with a game we haven’t heard from since it was announced – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. The trailer is billed as a gameplay reveal and if the game looks half as good as this trailer we’ll be stunned. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is still one of the best games we have ever played and this sequel is highly anticipated.

Next up is Quantic Dream’s shot at a Star Wars game. Star Wars Eclipse will reportedly take the same narrative heavy approach Quantic Dream’s previous games have but with more combat. The game is set in the High Republic era.

While the trailer is very good we’re waiting to see some gameplay before we get too excited.

Fans of DC’s heroes and rogues gallery will be pleased to know there are two games on the way. First up in Wonder Woman which is being developed by Monolith Productions, creators of Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and the sequel Shadow of War. Right now we know this will be an open-world single player game that will make use of the Nemesis system Monolith popularised.

The other DC property becoming a game is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. We aren’t entirely sure what we can expect here in terms of gameplay but the game is being developed by Rocksteady Studios so we’re cautiously optimistic about this one. Here’s hoping we don’t have another Marvel’s Avengers situation on our hands.

A rhythm game that uses heavy metal as it’s soundtrack? We are very interested. This shooter is being developed by The Outsiders and features the vocal stylings of Trivium’s Matt Heafy, Jinjer’s Tatiana Shmailyuk and Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Gluz among others. This looks heavier than our Spotify Wrapped this year and we’re very keen for this game. Oh and the vocals in the trailer below are Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe.

Over 20 former Telltale staffers are reportedly working on Star Trek: Resurgence a new game that is set after the Star Trek: The Next Generation. This game is said to be narrative focused and will tell the story of two civilizations on the brink of war. The game is scheduled to be released in 2022.

Finally, something we weren’t expecting was a Dune game.

Dune: Spice Wars is set in Frank Herbert’s universe but appears to take place solely on Arakkis where the various houses will battle for control of Spice production. The game is a 4X (Explore, Expand, Exploit and Exterminate) strategy game so we’re very keen to get our hands on this title. Dune: Spice Wars enters early access in 2022.
