Comair collaborating with Google Cloud to power digital transformation

Google Cloud has announced a collaboration with Comair to assist the aviation operator with its digital transformation efforts.

To that end, it will be developing projects in line with Comair’s desire to provide a seamless travelling experience for those flying with British Airways and Kulula.com, which the operator handles locally.

“Comair completed its infrastructure optimization plans as it migrated six labor-intensive, on-premise data centers to Google Cloud. The migration of traditional IT infrastructure enables the airline to run key workloads that include important financial data, secure customer records, airplane navigation information, and more—all on the cleanest cloud in the industry,” explains the operator in a press release sent to Hypertext.

Along with handling the necessary upgrades to infrastructure to handle peak travel periods and opening up access to AI and machine learning tools, Google Cloud is also working with Comair to update its legacy applications, such as the Kulula.com booking app.

“Comair’s digital transformation journey started before the pandemic, and was indeed accelerated by it, but the airline had taken a head start to digitization before the global lockdown was even in sight by migrating to the cloud. Also, by accelerating cloud adoption, Comair is able to reduce processing power for its systems and become more sustainable,” adds Niral Patel, director of Google Cloud Africa.

We are delighted to have moved to Google Cloud at a time when Cloud has become the foundation that enables businesses to transform, differentiate and gain competitive advantage. The sooner you digitally transform, the quicker you’re able to respond to uncertain times. As a result, the digital maturity measures we’ve put in place have helped drive a post-lockdown recovery,” enthuses Avsharn Bachoo, CIO of Comair.

As for when those travelling will be able to reap the benefits of the work being done behind the scenes to improves operations at Comair, remains to be seen. For now though, there is indeed efforts being made to improve travel in what has become an increasingly chaotic time.
