Last week Samsung officially unveiled three new flagship phones in the form of the Galaxy S22 series. The devices sport many of the components that one expects from the South Korean company, but the more interesting elements are on the inside.

This includes the software, with Samsung and Google deepening collaborative efforts on mobile and a deeper integration of the latter’s solution onto the newly revealed hardware.

According to a report by 9to5Google, this extends to the default messaging app on Galaxy S22 phones, with Google Messages being touted.

The Google-made messaging app has always been available to Galaxy phone users, but Samsung also had its own messaging app set as the default. This lead to bloatware in some cases, so the switch to Google Messages as default should be welcome by most users.

While Samsung has some interesting options of its own, having a “purer” Android experience, akin to some Nokia phones, will certainly add a bit more seamlessness to everything, which is one of the themes Samsung punted last week.

With some regions, mainly Europe, featuring Google Messages as the default on last year’s Galaxy foldables, it now looks like other parts of the globe including the US, will make the change too when the S22 series launches in a couple of weeks time.

The upshot of the change, as 9to5Google points out, is the addition of RCS to the mix, which will make the experience similar to that already experienced on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.

It also means Google’s plans to improve the overall messaging experience on Android devices takes a further step to fruition, with interest in the new S22 series high.

We took a look at the devices last week and got some hands-on time with production models, so it remains to be seen if South African S22 phones will have made the Google Messages switch too.
