COVID-19 in South Africa: 18th March 2022

We are readying to enter a long weekend, with Human Rights Day being celebrated next week Monday. While many will be using the public holiday to get some much needed relief from what has been a tough start to 2022, we still have COVID-19 in South Africa.

This as the two year anniversary since lockdown was first imposed in SA will be happening on 26th March.

Whether calls for further easing of restrictions will be heeded by government remains unclear, this week sees the daily figures related to the spread of the virus stay relatively low.

To that end, the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 1 682 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, with the total number of infections to date rising to 3 700 484.

The department also notes that 62 fatalities have been reported, with the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sitting at 99 829.

Other key figures sees the recovery rate sit steady at 96.9 percent, while more than 23.51 million tests have been conducted so far.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours sees 87 761 jabs administered, with turnout to sites dipping as the week progresses. As of 17:00 on 17th March 2022, a total of 32 903 329 vaccines have been administered in SA.
