Google adapts earthquake alert system to warn about air raids in Ukraine

As technology companies continue to impose sanctions on Russia, Google has designed a mobile tool for the Ukrainian people. This as the company has adapted its earthquake alert system to warn Android devices in the region about incoming air raids.

“Our Threat Analysis Group has been focusing on the safety and security of our users in Ukraine and the surrounding region, to help them access and share important information,” explained Google in an updated blog post regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“At the request, and with the help, of the government of Ukraine, we’ve started rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android phones in Ukraine. This work is supplemental to the country’s existing air raid alert systems, and based on alerts already being delivered by the Ukrainian government,” it adds.

As such, this measure is designed to help increase the reach of what the Ukrainian government has implemented.

For those with an Android device in the region, Google has been pointing to the Ukraine Alarm app on the Play Store, which has begun rolling out this week.

This tool is the latest in Google’s efforts to put pressure on Russia and help those in the Ukraine, with the company having already limited the reach of Russian state-owned media outlets on its platforms, as well as pausing ad sales in the country too.

Whether any of these sanctions will have the desired effect remains to be seen, with President Putin seemingly happy to hunker down and wage his war.
