htxt.africast – The great videogame difficulty debate

There’s a new FromSoft game out which means the old debate about videogame difficulty is back, and we’re looking at it again in this africast.

As always we tackle some news before the main topic and this week we start with Uber and the fact that many users of the service may see shorter trips cancelled. We looked into the matter and found that drivers simply can’t afford to offer them as longer trips offer higher fees and we found that Uber is now offering higher incentives to take these cheaper, shorter trips, but will this improve the situation?

Our other news topic this week is Pokémon and its World Championships which have been revealed to be happening this year in August after a two year absence due to the pandemic. This single event is actually multiple tournaments across different games and age groups to determine the best players in the world, and we’re glad to see it back in 2022.

Back to videogame difficulty and we look not only at the titles from FromSoftware, but also how difficulty ties into accessibility, player choice and inclusivity. We also look at parallels in these games to other genres, most notably the roguelike / roguelite genre which also uses extreme difficulty as a pillar of game design.

For those wondering about our header image this week it’s from an Elden Ring clip where a humble ram gets the killing blow on a player. Not a demon ram or some monster created for the game, just a regular old animal that we have in the real world.
