PlayStation suspending sale of hardware and software in Russia

Last night PlayStation hosted its latest State of Play, showcasing content and making announcements regarding upcoming releases. On the business front, PlayStation made another announcement, with it choosing to suspend all hardware and software sales in Russia.

It makes the Japanese company the latest firm to take steps against Russia and try to send a message to its leader over the recent conflicts and invasion of the Ukraine.

Whether this will actually lead to a positive outcome remains to be seen, but PlayStation had to do something to show solidarity with other gaming developers, studios and publishers over the war.

“Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) joins the global community in calling for peace in Ukraine,” SIE spokesperson Joe Taraborrelli told The Verge in a statement.

“We have suspended all software and hardware shipments, the launch of Gran Turismo 7, and operations of the PlayStation Store in Russia,” he added.

Along with those steps, Sony announced that it will make a $2 million donation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the NGO Save the Children to support those affected by the ongoing conflict.

PlayStation now joins the likes of Xbox, Bungie, Epic Games, EA, CD Projeckt RED, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard and others in suspending their operations in Russia. The same goes for Nintendo, which has put its Russian eShop into maintenance mode while the conflict continues.
