Reddit is reportedly working on TikTok-like video tools

As TikTok has climbed the ranks of the most popular social media apps, many other firms have attempted to emulate the platform in some form or another.

These attempts have had varying degrees of success and while Instagram’s Reels have gained a strong foothold in the market, others have quite simply failed.

The newest social media platform to toy with the idea of TikTok-like videos with features and tools similar to TikTok, is Reddit.

According to a report from TechCrunch, the so-called front page of the internet is currently exploring the idea of allowing users to post video responses its discussion forums. While one can already share video on Reddit, this idea would see Reddit housing its own video sharing features similar to those seen on TikTok namely Stitches and Duets.

Stitching a video allows a creator to use part of another creator’s video in their own without having to download it, edit it and then add their two cents. Duets allow users to appear alongside other content. Duets have sparked many viral hits such as ShantyTok which saw users recreating sea shanties en-masse.

As TechCrunch points out, Reddit doesn’t seem to want to compete with TikTok but rather drive engagement on its own platform.

To that end Reddit is engaging with various sub-Reddits to gauge whether this is something users want. From there the tools would need testing so it’s unlikely we’ll see these features anytime soon if ever.

We could see something like this taking off in some sub-Reddits but really, having to moderate video responses on top of all the other content posted every minute sounds like a bad time for moderators.

Of course these tools are still just ideas being thrown around and whether they will make their way to Reddit is an unknown quantity.
