UK police round up seven teens allegedly linked to LAPSUS$

Over the last few months a hacking collective known as LAPSUS$ has been sowing havoc at large firms, but the jig may be up as UK police have started arresting folks.

As per a report from the BBC, City of London Police have arrested seven teenagers who are believed to be a part of LAPSUS$. Whether the teenager who was reported on earlier this week and is reportedly known as White or Breachbase online, is among those seven is not clear.

While arrests were made, all of the suspects were released under investigation.

“Seven people between the ages of 16 and 21 have been arrested in connection with an investigation into a hacking group. They have all been released under investigation. Our inquiries remain ongoing,” the authorities told the BBC.

The teen said to be the mastermind of LAPSUS$ was reportedly outed through a situation of their own making. According to Brian Krebs of Krebs on Security, the teen allegedly purchased Doxbin in 2021. This website allows anyone to post the personal details of anybody to create a database of leaked information.

The teen was said to be a terrible administrator for the website and ultimately – albeit reluctantly – handed control of the website over to the previous owner. Unfortunately, the teen then leaked the entire Doxbin database which lead to Doxbin users doxing the teen.

The teen’s father appears to have no knowledge of their child’s online activities. “I had never heard about any of this until recently. He’s never talked about any hacking, but he is very good on computers and spends a lot of time on the computer. I always thought he was playing games,” the BBC quoted the father as saying.

It appears as if authorities are closing in on the LAPSUS$ group, but until we see more than arrests and releases, we suspect this won’t be the last we hear of the group.
