COVID-19 in South Africa: 7th April 2022

With face masks no longer mandatory when outside as a result of the lifting of the national state of disaster, the coming weeks will prove pivotal for COVID-19 in South Africa and a litmus test of the decision that was taken by government.

Added to this is the upcoming Easter weekend, with it predicted to be a potential trigger of a fifth wave of infections. Whether that comes to fruition remains to be seen, but if the country is to stave off the effects of future waves, more people need to be fully vaccinated.

For now, slow and steady progress have been made on that front, with the past 24 hours seeing 55 969 jabs administered in the past 24 hours, 28 518 of these being booster shots.

As of 17:00 on 6th April, a total of 33 991 918 vaccines have been administered across SA.

Shifting to the latest figures regarding the spread of the virus, the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 2 032 new cases have been reported over the past 24 hours, as the total number of infections recorded to date climbs to 3 727 208.

The department adds that three fatalities have been reported too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa reaches 100 070.
