Jaguar and Land Rover cars are getting what3words integration

You may have heard of what3words before. This firm had the bright idea of dividing the world into 3m by 3m squares and assigning each square a unique, three word phrase.

For example, if you key mess.tech.lizards into what3words you would be taken to the Johannesburg Zoo. It’s an incredibly clever solution especially if you are going places Google Maps may not have tracked.

So good is the idea that Jaguar Land Rover has announced that its vehicles with the Pivi Pro Infotainment system will receive an over-the-air update that allows owners to key in what3word locations for navigation. This update will form part of what Jaguar Land Rover calls the SOTA upgrade being offered to customers later this year.

“This world-changing technology is all about simplification, providing our customers with a seamless modern luxury experience that means they can find their way anywhere in the world without having to worry about connectivity. The partnership with what3words, enabled by HERE Technologies, further highlights our world-leading SOTA capability which allows us to offer services that are always on and always connected,” writes navigation product owner, digital product platform at Jaguar Land Rover, Mark Carter.

The car maker has directed Jaguar customers to this website to get acquainted with what3words’ functionality while Land Rover customers should head to this URL.

Importantly, this integration will be available to all Jaguar Land Rover vehicles – new and existing – so long as they use the Pivi Pro infotainment system.

This is an integration that makes a lot sense, especially for Land Rover. Off-road enthusiasts now have a digital solution that can get them to the most remote parts of the globe. Of course, it might make sense to bring a paper map along, just in case you don’t have signal on your adventures.
