The Last of Us Part I remake coming to PS5 in September, PC thereafter

The Summer Games Fest presentation is wrapped up and while the majority of content on show was for content we already knew was on the way, PlayStation served up a little bit of a surprise with an announcement trailer for the remake of The Last of Us Part I.

This is not to be confused with the Remaster that Naughty Dog developed following the 2013 release of the original iconic game for the PS3.

Instead this new offering is designed for the PS5 in particular, set to release on 2nd September later this year, which will also be followed by a PC release at a yet to be confirmed date.

PlayStation adds that this is not simply a new lick of paint either, with a top to bottom redesign having been done, along with adding some gameplay features that build on the capabilities of the PS5 console and DualSense controller.

“We’ve implemented modernized gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options in this single-player experience to allow even more individuals to enjoy the game. Effects, exploration, and combat have all been enhanced. Leveraging the PS5’s powerful hardware, we also implemented 3D Audio, haptics, and adaptive triggers,” notes PlayStation in a blog post.

“Both returning fans and new players alike will have the opportunity to experience both The Last of Us Part I and its prequel story Left Behind in a whole new way,” it adds.

Along with the recent announcement, standard and deluxe digital versions of the remake on set to go on pre-order soon, recommended to retail for $70 and $80 respectively.

The deluxe digital option features the base game, just like the standard edition, but also adds the following in-game items:

  • “Increased Crafting Speed Skill
  • Increased Healing Speed Skill
  • 9mm Reload Speed Increase Upgrade
  • Rifle Clip Capacity Increase Upgrade
  • Explosive Arrows Gameplay Modifier
  • Dither Punk Filter
  • Speedrun Mode
  • Six Weapon Skins: Black Gold 9mm Pistol, Silver Filigree 9mm Pistol, Rubber Tactical Shotgun, Sculpted Oak Shotgun, Arctic White Bow, Carbon Black Bow.”

At the time of writing we have not seen the pre-orders surface on the South Africa PlayStation store, nor local retailers, so pricing for those in SA remains to be confirmed.

Regardless though, the prospect of joining Joel and Ellie again on the PS5 is an enticing one.
