First day sees 165K online admissions for grades 1 & 8

Today is the day that the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) finally opens up online admissions for grade one and grade eight in 2023, and it has reported hundreds of thousands have come through already.

As of noon today, 165 000 admissions have been captured by the system, but this process started out with an issue.

“The 2023 Online Admissions System experienced a challenge with Google Maps when the application period for Grade 1 & 8 opened… The GDE Online Admissions System was temporarily restricted by Google Maps due to reaching a maximum of 6000 requests per minute, which resulted in parents not being able to view and select schools when applying.

Subsequently, this challenge was effectively resolved within 30 minutes after the System opened at 08:00 AM, and parents were able to proceed with their applications,” reads an announcement from the department.

After this snafu it seems that the process went smoother allowing for the large amount of admissions to be handled in just a few hours.

The 2023 Online Admissions System can be accessed from the GDE website here but there are in-person options available for those who need help.

“Parents are also encouraged to visit our District Offices and Decentralised Walk-in Centres to be assisted with applying. For further assistance applicants can call the GDE’s Contact Centre on 0800 000 789 or send a message on our WhatsApp 060 891 0361,” the department adds.

The GDE has also shared on Twitter, through Gauteng Education Spokesperson Steve Mabona, this handy set of images below showing the locations of the Walk-In Centres as well as their other details such as contact information.

The online admissions system will remain open until 19th August but parents and caregivers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
