After a mistaken reveal, Sackboy heads to PC for real

  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure was revealed a bit early by PlayStation Latin America.
  • The game has now been officially revealed for PC.
  • Customers on Steam and the Epic Games Store can buy it come 27th October.

Earlier this week we got a bit of an unintentional reveal when PlayStation Latin America uploaded a trailer for Sackboy: A Big Adventure coming to PC.

After this mistake Sony has now officially revealed the PC port of the 3D platformer with an announcement on the PlayStation Blog penned by Design Director at developer Sumo Digital, Ned Waterhouse.

Waterhouse chooses the visuals as the first upgrade that players can expect to enjoy, and you can watch at home depending on your screen resolution as this trailer goes all the way up to 4K. Support for higher resolution is one of the port’s features, which Waterhouse collects into the following list:

  • 4K with target @ 120FPS. The stunning patchwork of Craftworld is rendered in beautiful 4K detail.
  • Deep Learning Super Sampling. NVIDIA DLSS2 increases graphics performance using dedicated processors found only on GeForce RTX GPUs, boosting frame rates with uncompromised image quality.
  • VRR. Variable refresh rate support makes Sackboy more responsive than ever.
  • Wide screen! The game supports a wide range of display ratios, including ultrawide 21:9.3.

As for what hardware you’ll need to achieve some of those features, the PC requirements can be found here. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is surprisingly power hungry but only if you really crank the resolution and graphical features. 4K @ 60FPS, for example, will require a RTX 3080. Interestingly the PC requirements only use 60 FPS at various resolutions in the PC requirements, and not the lauded 120 FPS mentioned above by Waterhouse in the trailer below.

Those interested can explore more on the Steam and Epic Games Store product pages. We always recommend against pre-ordering to wait for initial reviews, but we will mention that there is some small cosmetic DLC for those who purchase early. Costumes based on the following characters will be unlocked by pre-ordering: Connor, Deacon St. John, Jin and Sam Porter Bridges.

As excited as we are to see another PlayStation exclusive come to PC, we were a bit disappointed by one section of the Steam page which only lists online co-op for Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Local co-op is a dying feature across the industry, but especially on PC. This is doubly disappointing as it’s touted as a main feature of the experience.

“One final note, the game is great in single player, however when played in co-op a whole new level of chaotic multiplayer fun ensues! So, make sure you share the experience with your friends,” Waterhouse writes.
