Cyberpunk 2077 continues sales success but can’t beat Modern Warfare II

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II launches next month.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 continues to ride a wave of sales not seen since its launch.
  • The Steam Deck remains the top selling item on Steam.

Ahead of its launch on 28th October next month, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the top selling game on Steam beating out Cyberpunk 2077 and Slime Rancher 2 for the position.

This comes to us, as always, from the unofficial tracking site Steam Database (SteamDB) which reports on the top sellers by revenue generated in the last seven days.

Cyberpunk 2077 was the best seller last week thanks to many factors such as a sale, a free update and the success of the Edgerunners anime. The game has experienced a boom in popularity – and sales – not seen since its much-hyped release in December 2020.

It is then an impressive feat that Modern Warfare II has managed to dethrone it, but then again the Call of Duty franchise is evergreen and every release usually comes with appropriate sales to match one of the biggest franchises in the game industry.

Most games see the majority of their sales happen around launch so we wouldn’t be surprised if the latest Call of Duty remains at the top of the pile for most of October as it releases.

  1. Steam Deck | 1st last week
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II | 3rd last week
  3. Cyberpunk 2077 | 2nd last week
  4. Slime Rancher 2
  5. FIFA 23
  6. Return to Monkey Island
  7. Construction Simulator
  8. God of War | 6th last week
  9. ELDEN RING
  10. NBA 2K23 | 5th last week

As it has been for many months now the Steam Deck is the best selling item on Steam, with the discussion so far just focusing on software.

Valve made a big push to market the Steam Deck in new territories by writing a book and publishing it in various languages aside from English. A physical version of this book, combined with a huge stand and lots of promotion, was rolled out for the Tokyo Game Show which happened between 15th and 18th September. We have to wonder if all that extra work helped with Steam Deck sales overseas.

As for the rest of the list there’s no big surprises aside from the appearance of Construction Simulator in seventh place. Launched on 20th September this game is likely, as we mentioned, experiencing the wave of sales that comes with a new release.

“Construction Simulator is back – bigger and better than ever! Take charge of over 70 machines, dozens of them brand new to the franchise, and build to your heart’s content on two huge maps – on your own or with your friends! ” reads the game description on Steam.
