Disney said to be working on a Disney Prime membership program

Following news in August that Disney+ would be upping subscription prices Stateside and introducing a new ad-supported tier, it looks like Disney is looking at even more avenues to generate revenue for its streaming platform and other properties.

This as reports suggest a Disney Prime offering is being worked on. It is unclear what guise this offering would take, but it is said that it would serve up more content and specialised incentives to subscribers.

According to The Wall Street Journal (paywall), Disney Prime, which is an unofficial name at this stage, could offer exclusive deals, discounts and perks to subscribers, much like Amazon Prime does.

The other aspect of it, which is slightly more nefarious, would be capturing more customer data in order to enable better selling off products when they visit other platforms or sites.

Before you start considering such an offering, the wall Street Journal notes that the plans for Disney Prime are still in their infancy, with no mention being made of how much a service like this would cost, nor what kind of customer segment or regions Disney would be eyeing for new platform.

That said, given the US and a handful of European countries were among the first to gain access to Disney+, it will likely surface there first too.

Either way, nothing is off the table for Disney in terms of how it plans to garner more revenue

“Technology is giving us new ways to customize and personalize the consumer experience so that we are delivering entertainment, experiences and products that are most relevant to each of our guests. A membership program is just one of the exciting ideas that is being explored,” explained Disney’s chief communications officer, Kristina Schake, to the WSJ when asked to comment on the matter.

With Disney already having a firm hold in South Africa on many fronts, there would no doubt be decent market if a Disney Prime service rolled out here in future.
