New South African LEGO store to give away countless prizes

  • The new LEGO store will open this weekend on 1st October in the Mall of Africa.
  • Hundreds of thousands of Rands will be given away in the form of prizes.
  • Events will be taking place the entire weekend.

Later this week South Africa will see the opening of the fifth LEGO store in the country as the Mall of Africa branch opens it doors on 1st October, and there’s many reasons to come by on the opening weekend including prizes totalling in hundreds of thousands of Rands.

The licence holder of LEGO Certified Stores in South Africa is Great Yellow Brick (Pty) Ltd, and we recently spoke to co-founder Robert Greenstein about what he and his team have planned for the weekend, and it’s quite a lot.

Starting with those who arrive early, the first 400 people through the door will get to spin a wheel to win prizes. Greenstein couldn’t tell us what the exact prizes were, but promises us that they’re good and worth waking up early for this Saturday.

For those who don’t want to be first through the door don’t worry as every single hour there will be another giveaway in the store.

Spending the whole day in a store may not sound ideal, but there will be plenty of activities planned for the weekend, especially for kids.

“There’s going to be various games and activities, directly outside the shop over the opening weekend for kids to play and win various prizes. There’ll be some cool LEGO mascots walking around the center for kids to engage with,” Greenstein writes.

With all the free LEGO being given away, there’s also incentives to come and spend your money. There will be double points at the Mall of Africa location only this weekend and you can find an explanation of how the points system works from one of our earlier stories here.

The double points can also be used on unreleased sets as pre-orders will be open on products launching in the middle of October. These include sets from Avatar, Black Panther, Super Mario, The Office and more.

Minifigure collectors will be happy too with a promotion running for the Build-a-minifigure stand. For those unfamiliar the Build-a-minifigure is a staple of LEGO stores and only available in them, allowing customers to, as the name suggests, create their own figures using available parts in the stand.

Greenstein has one last mystery for us as a surprise is promised for the adult LEGO crowd. We’re in the dark when it comes to what this is, but if we had to guess, it may be the recently-announced Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) Razor Crest from The Mandalorian. This behemoth has 6 187 pieces and is also scheduled for a mid October release like the other sets mentioned above.

As mentioned in our story below we’re impressed by this set but we’re not reaching for the credit card just yet, but maybe seeing it in person will sway us.

You’ll be paying R10K for the new LEGO Razor Crest in South Africa
