The DStv Streama box will be available locally from next month

  • The DStv Streama box will be available in South Africa from 1st October 2022.
  • The DStv Streama offers 4K streaming quality, if your TV supports 4K.
  • Along with DStv content, it will also facilitate the streaming of Showmax, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and YouTube.

Yesterday MultiChoice held its latest Showcase event. As has been the case in recent years, the event highlighted upcoming projects that the company is working on for the DStv side of the business, but unlike past years, we now have full details on its new Streama box.

The streaming device has been in development, at least publicly anyway, for two years, and now MultiChoice is readying to launch the DStv Streama on 1st October 2022.

“The digital TV box delivers content from DStv and other streaming services through a reliable internet connection. Compatible devices are turned into a smart TV, opening access to a bigger world of entertainment,” explains MultiChoice in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“The DStv Streama enables customers to stream their favourite DStv content from sport, entertainment, news and education and gives them access to a variety of other apps, such as Showmax, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube and YouTube kids,” it adds.

Other notable features will include the ability to stream content at 4K, provided the TV you have it connected to can support such visual quality, and the streaming platform makes it available too. Those hoping to experience Disney+ in 4K, for example, are out of luck for now.

Interestingly though, MultiChoice does not see this as a replacement for its normal decoders for some reason. The company’s release went on to explain that the Stream, “does not replace the DStv Explora or Explora Ultra but can be used alongside these devices to meet the viewing needs of everyone in the family.”

Where its customers will feel the same way remains to be seen. For now though, MultiChoice finally has a player in the streaming box market.

As for pricing, the company did not officially reveal it at the time of writing, but MyBroadband reports that it will retail for a recommended R1 299.
