  • The latest OS update for iPhone is here in the form of iOS 16.1.
  • The revamped OS is available in South Africa right now for download and installation.
  • iOS 16.1 brings some new and revamped features, including iCloud Shared Photo Library and updates to Live Activities, Health and Fitness, Wallet and more.

The highly anticipated update to the iPhone OS 16 is here, and it comes with some new and revamped features.

Apple unveiled the new iOS 16.1 on Monday, alongside a new macOS and iPadOS, all coinciding with the launches of several new devices, including new iPads and an Apple TV.

According to Forbes, iOS 16.1 is available to run on all iPhone devices from iPhone 8 onwards. So that includes all iPhone 8 models, all versions of the iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone SE, and iPhone 14.

What’s new with iOS 16.1?

Apart from the regular bug fixes, there are some new and improved features. The update is around 800MB to 5.26GB in size.

First up, iOS 16.1 gets the iCloud Photo Library, bringing new ways for you to share photos with friends and family. You and five others can now add, edit, or remove images in a shared library.

Live Activities now expand to third-party apps. This means that if you’re waiting for a food delivery your iPhone’s display will update in real-time on the lock screen – or in Dynamic Island if you’re using an iPhone 14 Pro.

The Home app is getting Matter, a “new smart home connectivity standard” which now allows a range of smart home accessories to work together.

Key sharing comes to the Wallet app. You can now share car, hotel room and other keys in Wallet using communication apps like Messages and WhatsApp.

When iOS 16 was launched Health and fitness was improved with new medication tracking features. Now, 16.1 will let you subscribe to Apple Fitness+ even without an Apple Watch. Now, using only iPhone sensors you can track your steps, distance and workouts and you will get an estimate of your burned calories.

The update includes fixes for deleted conversations that may appear in the conversations list in Messages. It also introduces a patch for a bug where CarPlay failed when connected using a VPN app.

How to upgrade to iOS 16.1

Like always, updating your OS is simple. The first thing Apple recommends you do is to use iCloud or your computer to create a backup of your device.

Then, make sure your iPhone is plugged into a power source and connected to the internet over WiFi.

After this, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Next, tap Install Now. You will surely have to wait a while and follow the on-screen instructions. Following this, you will be able to take advantage of all the new features of iOS 16.1.

The update is available in South Africa right now to download and install.
