• Sony has some ambitious plans for the PSVR 2, aiming to ramp up production between now and March 2023.
• The company began mass production in September and has not seen supply chain constraints so far.
• That said, the figure being touted could change depending on demand next year.

Earlier this year Sony unveiled its latest virtual reality headset in the form of the PSVR 2. At the time it was only an unveiling, and at the time of writing, an official release date is yet to confirmed. The general consensus, however, is that the device will debut globally in early 2023.

Now reports suggest Sony is betting big on the PSVR 2, with sources close to the mater telling Bloomberg that as many as 2 million headsets will be manufactured between now and March 2023. In fact, Sony stock rose by 2.4 percent on Monday morning on the back of these reports.

While it is pleasing to see Sony gearing up for a big launch, it is puzzling to see manufacture of the PSVR 2 ramping up amid continued supply issues around the PS5 console, which still remains difficult to come by.

The reason why Sony can be so buoyant is the fact that it began production of the new virtual reality headset in September and is yet to encounter any supply chain issues. That seems like tempting fate if you ask us, but for now, the stability has seen the company set an ambitious target.

That said, the aforementioned 2 million figure could be adjusted depending on market demand for the PSVR 2 when it eventually goes on sale in early 2023.

We’d much rather prefer more resources be directed at fixing the PS5’s ailing supply chain issues, but it looks like Sony is prioritising its latest peripheral instead. With VR still trying to find its feet, it will be interesting to see just how many people want to buy this new headset when it is launched.
