Why your next TV should be an LG QNED

As we get further through the end of 2022 and into the start of 2023, it may seem like the world of TVs has become rather stale with online retailers and big box stores stuffed to the brim with similar displays that don’t offer you anything you haven’t seen before.

LG is looking to change that, however, with its family of QNED TVs. Quantum dot nanorod emitting diode (QNED) displays are a combination of NanoCell and Quantum Dot technologies that LG has perfected to offer you the ultimate viewing experience.

QNED achieves this with Mini LEDs that are far smaller and more advanced than others. How small? At just 300 micrometres they are 1/40th the size of a regular LED. To put that into perspective a thick piece of hair is only around 200 micrometres.

But why go this small? By shrinking the size of the LEDs it allows for greater brightness, better blacks and increased detail. When it comes to how many LEDs you can fit into a display, more is more and more is better.

This smaller LED size really shows its value when you increase the size of the screen. The LG QNED range maxes out at a rather astounding 86inches. Anyone who has experienced these supersized TVs in the past may have found that the size comes with the downside of problems like loss of detail when you’re sitting too close or images being stretched or looking jagged even at higher resolutions like 4K and 8K.

The QNED system shines here by maintaining LED density even on this large scale, and this is backed up by several features LG has packed into their TVs to make the viewing experience flawless with our favourite being the smart processor which actively enhances low-resolution content to make it look better on a bigger screen.

Here in South Africa, with our lower internet speeds and vast distances to servers, it can be difficult to stream 4K and 8K content making this feature even more valuable. Those who want a higher resolution, bugger screen while still enjoying their old content will be very happy too.

This sharpness on such a scale can only be matched by theatres, which is very intentional from LG. The QNED family of TVs is meant to be a home cinema, again with specific functionality you won’t find elsewhere. A great example of this is Filmmaker Mode, which tweaks several aspects of the display to make it closer to the film’s original look.

You may remember a few years ago when Tom Cruise and director Chris McQuarrie appeared in a PSA to espouse problems with display motion smoothing. Well look no further than the Filmmaker Mode which turns motion smoothing off.

Lastly, for those who want to go right past shows and movies and directly to gaming, LG hasn’t forgotten you. Certain QNED TVs support AMD FreeSync Premium or Variable Refresh Rate just like gaming-focused monitors. Also experience higher refresh rates at 4K with 120Hz supported on certain models.

If you’ve been stuck gaming at your desk for the best gaming experience, it may be time to come back to the lounge to enjoy it with everyone else… or pick up an LG QNED for your gaming area.

And to do that you can find LG QNED products available in South Africa now. With the holiday season coming up and some time finally freeing up to catch up on all that content you’ve been meaning to get to, it’s never been a better time for an upgrade to QNED.
