Spotify increasing prices in 53 countries

Spotify has announced that pricing increases for access to its music streaming platform is set go into effect from today.

This change apply specifically for new subscribers, while existing ones are given a month’s grace period, according to a FAQ.

The impromptu change will take place in 53 countries, including the United States, but luckily for those in South Africa, no increase has been mentioned at the time of writing.

As for why the prices are set to increase, the platform cited the rather “broad” influence of worldwide market conditions, which is similar to what other streaming platforms have done in recent weeks.

“The market landscape has continued to evolve since we launched. So that we can keep innovating, we are changing our Premium prices across a number of markets around the world. These updates will help us continue to deliver value to fans and artists on our platform,” the company explained in a blog post.

“Starting from today, existing subscribers in these markets will receive an email explaining what this means for their account.”

As for the price increases, Spotify used the United States as its benchmark. To that end, the Premium Single subscription has increased to $10.99 from $9.99, while the Premium Family has risen from $15.99 to $16.99, and the Premium Student was $4.99 but is now $5.99.

Locally the Premium Single is still listed at R59.99 per month, while Family (up to six accounts) is R99.99 per month.

The aforementioned 53 countries that will see price increases from today onwards are, “Andorra, Albania, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Croatia, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, Sweden, Singapore, Slovenia, Slovakia, San Marino, Thailand, Türkiye, United States, Kosovo.”
