What South Africans listen to for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • This month Spotify launched a pop-up cafe in Johannesburg called Greasy Tunes for the whole of July.
  • The pop-up cafe will serve a unique locally-inspired menu, as well as feature music-related events for people to attend.
  • To mark the launch, Spotify has shared the most popular artists and albums people listen to during breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

For the month of July, Spotify is doing something a little bit different in South Africa. The music streaming platform launched a pop-up location in Johannesburg called Greasy Tunes, which features a unique locally-inspired menu and music-related events for people to enjoy throughout this month.

To mark the launch, Spotify has also shared some insight into what South Africans enjoy to listen to during breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The data is specific to those in Gen Z, so sadly the millennials in our office may not be able to relate, but the information is at least interesting to look at, as it covers artists, albums, songs, and podcasts.

“Music and food have always been intertwined, whether it’s a celebration meal, a romantic dinner, or a long, lazy, brunch- music is an integral part of the experience.  New data from Spotify has been able to pinpoint what sonic pairings South African GenZs are whipping up at mealtimes,” the platform explained in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“It turns out that GenZs (people aged between 18-26) are very specific about what podcasts they listen to around specific mealtimes, but when it comes to music, there is little change between the hours,” it added.

Perhaps it is a good thing the data focused solely on Gen Z, as we had no idea there was a podcast called The Ass-Breaking Motivation. See what else is popular during breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the tables below. There are hyperlinks too should you wish to listen to any of the below on Spotify.
