Huawei ICT Academy launches free course for young women this week

  • To mark Youth Month, the Huawei ICT Academy has made a free course available to those wanting to upskill.
  • The Young Woman in Tech programme is a free course that will be made freely available between 21st to 28th June 2023.
  • The course is open to all young women who are either currently studying in the ICT field or who would like to in the future.

As many South Africans know, June is Youth Month, with last week Friday being used to remember the events of the Soweto uprising. To showcase its efforts when it comes to the youth of SA, the Huawei ICT Academy has launched the Young Woman in Tech programme.

This initiative is a newly developed free course that is being made available by the company to young women in SA that are currently in an ICT-related field, or are looking to begin a career in one.

The course will be made available in the coming days, specifically from 21st to 28th June 2023.

“The course programmes will take place entirely online and will cover topics including artificial intelligence (AI), big data and cloud computing,” explained Huawei in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“The initial training will then be followed by masterclasses in each of the topics, taking place from 3 to 17 July and will culminate in final exams to be written in the first week of August. Successful students will then receive the career certification in the relevant course,” it added.

Those wanting to take part in the free course need to simply fill out an online form found here before 20th June 2023. This is not the first time that Huawei has ran such an initiative aimed at upskilling or piquing the interest of young people interested in the ICT sector.

“Following the success of our previous programmes in 2021 and 2022, we felt that it was important to expand it to young women. Women currently make up just 13% of graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects, meaning that we all have roles to play when it comes to ensuring that the sector is as equitable as possible,” noted Vanashree Govender, Media Relations and Communications manager at Huawei South Africa.

“I’m excited because this is an opportunity to engage with young women and to talk to, empower, and influence them to understand their abilities. As women, we often underestimate ourselves. Programmes like this provide a great opportunity for young women to unleash their full potential,” added Tabani Njaba, who will be handling the big data track of the Huawei ICT Academy programme.
