Sony reveals most popular games from 5 years of PS VR

In today’s edition of “where has the time gone?” Sony has shared some details about the top games from the past five years of PlayStation Virtual Reality (PS VR).

Isabelle Tomatis – Senior Director, PS VR, eSports, Peripherals Marketing and Licensing at Sony Interactive Entertainment – reveals that more than five hundred games and experiences were released over the last half decade.

“Since the PS VR launch, we have seen a diverse range of unique experiences that showcase a sense of presence we set out to achieve with this platform, including critically acclaimed games such as the thrilling sights and sounds action shooter Rez Infinite, the epic rescue mission platformer Astro Bot Rescue Mission, and the stealth action of Hitman 3,” Tomatis writes on the PlayStation Blog.

To mark the occasion PlayStation Plus subscribers will be getting three VR games games for no extra charge, but what those games are has not been revealed just yet.

As for which existing games have had the biggest success on the PS VR platform, Sony has revealed the top performers in terms of most played between 13th October 2016 and 31st August 2021. This excludes Playroom VR, however.

Most-Played PlayStation VR Games, By Region

  • Europe: Rec Room, PlayStation VR Worlds, Beat Saber, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim VR, Resident Evil 7 biohazard
  • North America: Rec Room, Beat Saber, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, Job Simulator, Firewall: Zero Hour
  • Japan: Resident Evil 7 biohazard, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, PlayStation VR Worlds, Beat Saber, Gran Turismo Sport

 Most-Played PlayStation VR Games Globally

  • Rec Room
  • Beat Saber
  • PlayStation VR Worlds
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
  • Resident Evil 7 biohazard

We understand that South Africa, and Africa as a whole, isn’t a big market for Sony, but we would have at least liked to see our continent represented in the regional reveal. Hell we could have at least been rolled into the MEA (Middle East and Africa) region like we usually are.

That aside there isn’t too many surprises here. Smaller games like Beat Saber and Rec Room have had continued success over the years in comparison to bigger titles such as Skyrim VR and Resident Evil 7.

For those who want some insight from game developers who work on PS VR titles, check out this PlayStation Blog post which includes comments from several developers talking about their experiences making VR for console.

With both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S offering more power than ever in the console market the future of virtual reality outside of the PC space looks promising but Sony and Microsoft will need to make the move first to provide new headsets and controllers in this space as PS VR becomes even older.
