Google “pausing” YouTube payments and Play Store billing in Russia

Ever since Russia invaded the Ukraine earlier this month, tech companies like Google have been taking steps to restrict access to services in the region and put pressure on the Russian government.

The latest move from Google might impact content creators and app developers more, however, as the company is “pausing” payments on YouTube and billing in the Play Store.

“Due to payment system disruption, Google Play has paused its billing system for users in Russia as of March 10, 2022. This means users cannot purchase apps and games, make subscription payments or conduct any in-app purchases of digital goods using Google Play in Russia. Free apps will remain available on the Play Store,” it explained in an updated support page.

“The situation is rapidly evolving and we encourage you to return to this page for the latest information. Below we have addressed some additional questions developers might have and will continue to keep them updated,” it added.

While the move is much in keeping with previous steps taken by Google since the invasion first began, one can’t help but think how content creators and app developers will be impacted by the decision.

On that front, Google told Reuters that creators can still earn generate revenue from viewers outside of Russia, with super chats and merchandise sales still permitted. Unfortunately though, any ongoing subscriptions will not be renewed following this announcement, the company confirmed.

App developers have less luck though, with no additional means of revenue generation mentioned.

Whether this hasty move will prove crippling for people other than the Russian government remains to be seen, but it is clear that creators and devs in the region are now being seen as collateral damage.

If you have further queries about these steps, you can read the full FAQ related to the announcement, here.
