Comedy sells on Steam in August

  • Valve has released its monthly recap of the top sellers on Steam for August 2022.
  • The two standouts, according to the company, were Summer blockbuster games and title incorporating comedy.
  • The way Valve will share this information going forward has changed.

As we end September Valve has, as usual, shared the results of what sold well on Steam last month, with a recap of the August performers.

Valve provides this information with an intro explaining some of the trends of what sold and, for August, it points out two themes: Summer blockbusters and comedy.

We’ll start with comedy so we can explain that header image as soon as possible. That image is from the release trailer of Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed, a game mentioned by Valve for selling thanks to humour.

“Creating a Top Release is no laughing matter for developers, with plenty of hard work, careful planning, and creative spark going into each and every game that makes it to the top. While creating one of these is no joke, August’s Top Releases brought plenty of laughs to Steam libraries. For Cult of the Lamb and Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed, players are encouraged to push the boundaries of dark humor as they explore familiar archetypes with morbidly unique twists,” the company writes.

Other games incorporating comedy in some way and mentioned in the intro include PlateUp!, Two Point Campus and Hooked on You, a dating sin spinoff of Dead by Daylight.

For something more serious Valve mentions blockbuster games like Spider-Man and Guild Wars 2 doing well last month. The latter MMO managed to climb the charts thanks to a variety of events around its 10th anniversary, which started near the end of August.

The top release for August including regular paid games, DLC and free-to-play can be found below, as well as on the usual dedicated Steam page, but now there’s another option.

Valve recently overhauled the Steam Charts section of the site to provide more information to the public about sales on the platform. This seems to be rather close to the type of data that was traditionally posted by third party unofficial tracker Steam Database (SteamDB) which we used in the past to bring you weekly sales news.

Going forward Valve will integrate the monthly sales results into the Steam Charts page, and you can view August here. This change may be why we witnessed some irregularities in the lists, such as games not appearing if you reload the page. Hopefully the September report will be fully functional.

As always the lists below are organised in alphabetical order as Valve provides the names at random. Paid content is included based on sales within two weeks after launch, and free games judged by unique players after release.
