iPhone 14 could cost more when it lands in South Africa

Earlier this week, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 14 and 14 Pro devices, with the quartet of smartphones set to go up for pre-order in South Africa next week.

At the time of writing we do not have an official local price for any of the new iPhone models, but in other parts of the globe, prices have gotten a notable bump.

This is a little disappointing as Apple noted that the standard iPhone 14 was priced similarly to last year’s device, but as it turns out, that pricing is only for the United States and China.

Those regions that fall outside those two countries have seen the prices rise on the iPhone 14, as reported by CNBC. On this front the publication cites the UK, Australia, Japan, Ireland and Germany as countries where the price has increased compared to what was shared by Apple earlier this week.

It is worth pointing out, however, that Apple does state “from” when it comes to pricing on any of its devices, as is standard practice across the consumer electronics industry.

That said, in the UK for example, the standard iPhone 14 now retails for £849 compared to the £799 price tag of the iPhone 13 last year.

There is a similar rise in price for Ireland too, with the Apple Watch Series 8 also highlighted as receiving a bump compared to last year’s wearable. The same goes for countries in Europe like Italy and France, according to The Verge.

Speaking to CNBC, analysts have noted that the rise in price is down to the fact that the US dollar is particularly strong at the moment. “The key takeaway is the Euro and Yen has depreciated quite a bit translating to slightly higher prices,” Neil Shah, partner at Counterpoint Research, told the publication.

While that might be the case, consumers will care very little about exchange rates given Apple noted the same prices several times in its “Far Out” presentation this week.

What that will hold for South African iPhone fans remains to be seen, but it would not surprise anyone if the standard iPhone 14 costs more than its predecessor. For reference, the standard iPhone 13 (128GB) retailed for R17 299 when it launched locally in October last year.

We will now have to wait to see just how much of a bump the latest offering from Apple gets.
